as your Doula

What is involved once a Doula is hired?

Once you have your Doula, typically you will meet with her at least twice before you go into labour. These meetings serve to get the woman (and her partner) comfortable with the Doula, so that when the big day arrives, the Doula will be a comforting and knowledgeable presence in the hospital.
At these appointments, the Doula may also review or help you prepare a birth plan if you so desire her help in this aspect. This does help everyone to work as a team. But if you already have a birth plan and are happy with it, the Doula will just need an opportunity to acquaint herself with it so that she is familiar with your ideas.

The Doula will also describe what comfort techniques she has to offer, and explain different positions, so you will already be familiar with them when you are in labour. Depending on previously agreed upon choices and what happens when labour begins, a Doula will either provide early labour support at the home or meet the mom and birth partner at the hospital, and will remain throughout the birth.

Following the birth, the doula usually gives a follow-up call the next day and then visits the new family a week after returning home.
